Post Matric Programme, 13'th school year Academic Programme

The focus of this 13’th school year programme is Mathematics, Science and English with an intention to develop the students' capacity and autonomy within the learning space during the year after they have completed their grade 12. 

The programme is designed for students who want to acquire a deeper understanding of mathematics, physics, and chemistry and improve on their English language skills before they go to study engineering or sciences at university. Unlike the school curriculum, this programme's content is more orientated towards preparing students for university studies. Students are further given the opportunity to enter for and rewrite their NSC Mathematics, Physical Science and English in the NSC examinations held in October/November every year. 

The year is built around the academic programme but we find that most students also benefit greatly from the guidance and support that are available to them throughout the year. Many students have uninformed ideas in terms of their (current) career choices and we find that this year provides them with the necessary support to clarify ideas, and often open up further/other ideas that (become) available to them.


Work in schools, Primary and Secondary Schools

Ukuqonda follows a four-pronged approach to impact on learning mathematics, science and technology in schools and are involved in the following projects:

  • Development and dissemination of high-quality learning materials. In collaboration with the Sasol-Inzalo Foundation and the Department of Basic Education, the Ukuqonda Institute has developed textbooks and teacher manuals for Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 to 6) Mathematics and Senior Phase (Grades 7 to 9) Mathematics and Technology which will be distributed to all schools public schools in South Africa during 2017-2018.
  • Professional development through intensive in-service training and professional support of subject advisors. This in-service training is based on and utilises the textbooks and teacher manuals that Ukuqonda has developed over the past four years. 
    • In 2014 Ukuqonda provided two weeks of intensive residential training to more than 300 Grade 7, 8 and 9 subject advisors for Mathematics and Technology in all 9 provinces. In 2015, these subject advisors provided similar training to heads of departments and other key teachers in schools across the country.
    • In 2017 is Ukuqonda providing one week of intensive residential training to more than 100 Grade 4, 5 and 6 Mathematics subject advisors from all 9 provinces in South Africa. Again, these subject advisors will provide similar training to heads of departments and other key teachers in schools across the country during the rest of 2017.
  • Direct engagement with selected learners outside normal school time, by means of Saturday classes, self-study programs and vacation schools. These engagements are focused on supporting learners who already show promise and high -fliers who may enter university study after completing Grade 12. At present, our extra-curricular interventions are geographically localised in specific target areas.
  • Engagement with teachers with the intention of benefiting all learners in the schools where the targeted teachers teach. Whereas our engagement with teachers was geographically localised in the past, we are now moving in the direction of engaging with highly committed young teachers who are geographically spread.
